RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty is a surgical intervention that modifies the shape of the nose. It can be performed for aesthetic reasons, to improve the appearance of the nose, or for functional reasons, to improve breathing or correct a birth defect. Rhinoplasty can modify the bone, cartilage and skin of the nose, depending on the needs and goals of each patient. Rhinoplasty is a customized surgery that requires careful planning and consultation with the surgeon.

WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?

Rhinoplasty surgery usually lasts between one and three hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery. The surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. There are two main types of rhinoplasty: open and closed. In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision in the columella, the strip of tissue that separates the nostrils, and lifts the skin of the nose to access the underlying structures. In closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions inside the nostrils and does not lift the skin. The surgeon then reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose according to the desired result. The skin is then re-draped to the new shape and the incisions are closed with stitches.

RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY

Recovery from rhinoplasty varies depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure. Some common aspects of rhinoplasty recovery are:

  • After surgery, the nose may be plugged with gauze or splints to support the new shape and prevent bleeding. They are usually removed after a few days.
  • The nose and surrounding area may be swollen, bruised and sore for several weeks.
  • Ice packs, pain relievers and head elevation can help reduce discomfort and swelling.
  • The patient may have to wear a nasal splint or tape for about a week to protect the nose and keep it stable.
  • The patient should avoid blowing the nose, sneezing forcefully or wearing glasses that rest on the nose for several weeks.
  • The patient should avoid strenuous activities, contact sports and sun exposure for several months.
  • The final results of rhinoplasty may take up to a year or more to become apparent as the nose continues to heal and adapt to its new shape.
