During this month, the most important newspaper in the state and throughout the country recognized our surgeon, positioning Dr. Hermes Avila Pelayo as one of the best plastic surgeons with current credentials and fully certified throughout Mexico.
During their interview, they talked about their alliances and certifications that seek to raise the professional level of medical care in Baja California MX. Here is the interview with our scalpel superstar.
What do foreign patients look for in medical services in Tijuana?
The foreign patient is looking for professional care, quality and lower costs in health services. In regional medicine we have achieved a high level of specialization thanks to important academic alliances, it is well known that we have an excellent relationship with international associations such as ISAPS and ASPS.
ISAPS and ASPS, including in 1992 Mexico held the presidency of the International Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeons directed by José Guerrero Santos.
What are the services most requested by medical tourism in our region?
Among the most frequent surgeries are gastric sleeve, rhinoplasty, breast implants, liposculpture, abdominoplasty, mastopexy and rhytidoplasty (facial rejuvenation surgery, eyelids, mouth fat, neck, etc.). Post-bariatric reconstruction surgeries are also performed, where excess skin is removed. To perform this type of procedure requires a team of trained professionals, certified under regulations, equipment, materials, processes and logistics regulated to ensure the preservation of life and health.
Do you consider that the medical services offered by Tijuana for foreigners are of quality and innovative?
After Turkey, Mexico is the second place in the world in medical tourism, and although medical tourism takes place all over our country, Tijuana is the most important city and border in this area. Medical tourism represents 29 billion pesos, in addition to the economic impact it has on the hotel industry, restaurants, transportation, food, nursing, hospitals and thousands of employees.
We have proven to be the best in the world in quality and professionalism, premises that must be maintained to ensure and care for patients during their stay in our country, hence the importance of being perfectly trained and certified.
How do you guide your patients seeking surgery?
It is a whole process, for example, 250 bariatric surgeries a day (100 thousand a year) will be performed in Tijuana, and 500 plastic surgeries a day (200 thousand a year).
In order to establish these logistic processes, we have a continuous medical update, we never stop, we are part of national and international groups and we meet every week in academic committee meetings.
That is why we always ask the patient to verify that the plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon is certified by AMCPER and CMCPER, that the procedure is performed in a safe place certified by the Ministry of Health with all the necessary infrastructure.
In addition, the patient should request a medical history, where they should provide all their history such as the use of psychotropic medications, habits, diet and diseases.
They should have realistic expectations, achievable expectations, listen to their doctor and express with confidence what they want under an agreement. At the end of the day, it is a contract for professional services in which both parties have responsibilities.
What is the challenge for Tijuana to maintain this position?
The creation of associations and colleges, these associations have first class surgeons and professors that are part of these organizations by academic merit and that is what makes the big difference. The colleges belong to the Consejo Nacional Regulador de Consejos de Especialidades Médicas (CONACEM); the Asociación Mexicana de Cirugía Plástica Estética y Reconstructiva (AMCPER); Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica Estética y Reconstructiva (CMCPER); Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía General (CMCG) and the Colegio Mexicano de Obesidad y Enfermedades Metabólicas (CMCOEM).
