Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia, which means the patient is awake but does not feel pain. The surgeon makes small incisions along the natural creases of the eyelids, and then removes or repositions excess skin, muscle and fat. The incisions are closed with fine sutures, and the patient may have some swelling, bruising and discomfort for a few days after surgery.
The results of eyelid surgery are usually long-lasting, but can be affected by aging, sun exposure and lifestyle factors. To maintain results, patients are advised to protect their eyes from the sun, use moisturizers and eye creams, and avoid smoking and alcohol. Eyelid surgery can improve the appearance and function of the eyes, but it cannot change their shape or treat other conditions such as crow’s feet, dark circles under the eyes or drooping eyebrows. You will notice that your eyes appear more open, alert and youthful and that your vision improves if you previously had drooping eyelids. The results of blepharoplasty usually last between 10 and 15 years, depending on the individual and the technique used. Some people may need revision surgery after that period to maintain the desired look.
Candidates should be in excellent physical and mental health before undergoing eyelid surgery. Patients should also have realistic expectations about the results of the procedure.
Pregnant women are discouraged from undergoing blepharoplasty. Must not have recently undergone any cosmetic surgery to the face or neck, as this may interfere with postoperative recovery. You must not be taking anticoagulants, have a blood disease or suffer from an autoimmune disorder. Patients must also be able to take anesthesia without allergic reactions.
