A gastric balloon is a device inserted into the stomach to help with weight loss. It is a temporary, nonsurgical procedure that can reduce appetite and make you feel full more quickly. Gastric balloons are not the same as gastric bypass or other weight loss surgeries, which involve changing the shape or size of the stomach or intestines. Gastric balloons are typically used for people with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40, and who have tried other weight loss methods without success. Gastric balloons may also be an option for people with a BMI as low as 27, depending on their health status and medical history.

About the Gastric Balloon

The procedure for placing a gastric balloon involves passing an endoscope (a thin tube with a camera and a light) through your mouth and into your throat. The endoscope allows the doctor to see inside your stomach and insert the balloon through a small opening in your esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach). The balloon is filled with saline (salt water) or gas, depending on the type of balloon you have. The balloon can hold up to 700 cc of fluid, which is about 20% of your stomach’s capacity. The balloon remains in your stomach for about six months, during which time it gradually deflates and moves up into your small intestine. This allows you to eat less and lose weight.

Gastric balloon recovery

Recovery after having a Gastric Balloon placed is usually quick and easy. You may experience some pain, nausea, bloating, or gas after the procedure, but these symptoms should improve within a few days. You will need to follow some instructions from your doctor about how to care for yourself after the procedure, such as avoiding certain foods, taking medications, or doing breathing exercises. You will also need to continue making healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating well, exercising regularly, and managing stress. These changes are essential to maintaining your weight loss results after the Gastric Balloon is removed.

Are you the right candidate for Gastric Balloon?

To determine if you are a good candidate for Gastric Balloon placement, you will need to undergo some tests and evaluations by your doctor. These may include measurement of your BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, liver function tests, kidney function tests, heart function tests, lung function tests, sleep apnea tests, thyroid function tests, bone density tests, or other medical conditions that may affect your suitability for the procedure. Your doctor will also discuss with you the benefits and risks of Gastric Balloon placement compared to other weight loss options.

Gastric Balloons typically last six months, but can vary depending on how well you follow your doctor’s instructions and how much weight you lose during this period. Some people may lose more than 10% of their body weight with Gastric Balloons, while others may lose less than 5%2. The average weight loss with Gastric Balloons ranges from 10% to 15%. You should have regular check-ups with your surgeon to monitor the status of your implants and detect any problems early. You should also watch for signs and symptoms of implant failure, such as changes in the shape, size, or feel of your breasts, pain, swelling, redness, or inflammation. If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, you should contact your surgeon immediately.
Like any medical procedure or device implant surgery, gastric balloons carry some potential risks and complications, including:
  • Pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux.
  • Balloon deflation: This means the balloon loses its air content over time due to natural gas production in your body. This can cause abdominal discomfort, hunger pangs, or difficulty eating.
  • Balloon deflation usually occurs within six months of placement.
  • Balloon migration: This means the balloon moves out of its intended position in the stomach due to gravity or other factors. This can cause obstruction, a perforation (hole) in the stomach wall, inflammation (infection) in the digestive tract, or fluid leakage from the abdomen.
  • Balloon migration is rare but serious. It requires immediate medical attention.
  • Overinflation: This means the balloon becomes too full due to excessive gas production in the body. This may cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, build-up of gas pressure in other organs (such as the lungs), difficulty breathing (dyspnea), chest pain (angina pectoris), heart attack (myocardial infarction), stroke (ischemic stroke), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung), pneumothorax.
